Switzerland and the Surrounding Countries

As you can see from the map, Switzerland is surrounded by five countries. They are Germany, France, Liechtenstein, Austria and Italy.

Switzerland's Flag

The Thirteenth Century German emperor would always carry around a flag with a cross as a holy sign and a red flag to show his power over life and death. This was when the Swiss Confederacy was really split up. Over time they became more joined together and they needed some say to recognize who was on who's side in a war. So they would have two white stripes in the shape of the cross somewhere on them. About half-way through the fifteenth century this sign was put on the flag.
